South East England Health Strategy - Full versionThe South East is one of the healthiest regions in England, but in common with elsewhere in the country faces many challenges to current and future health.

The South East Health & Well-Being Strategy was published in February 2008 and sets out the vision for improving the health and well-being of people living in the region.

The production of the strategy was led by the Department of Health South East and followed a period of consultation with regional and local stakeholders including South Central and South East Coast Strategic Health Authorities, Government Office for the South East, South East England Development Agency, and representatives from the NHS and local government.

At the core of the strategy are six themes which were collectively identified as the shared health and well-being priorities for the region. The six themes are:

• reducing health inequalities
• promoting a sustainable region
• developing safer communities
• increasing the positive relationship between employment and health
• improving outcomes for children and young people
• improving outcomes in later life.

The Health & Well-Being Strategy provides a framework which brings together regional and local work which is aimed at improving the health and well-being of the population of the South East.

Comments on this strategy are welcome and can be addressed to Professors Yvonne Doyle and John Newton, the South East England regional directors of public health:
